Young Living Essential Oils

What Are Essential Oils?

Young Living is a brand of essential oils, or aromatherapy oils, and are the fragrant essence of a plant. These highly concentrated liquid oils are the foundation of aromatherapy, which is the practice of using the natural oils for physiological and psychological well-being.

The most common groups of chemical components found in essential oils are terpenes, alcohols, esters, ketones, aldehydes, and phenols. Most essential oils are antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. The antioxidant value in some essential oils alone is absolutely amazing. Just an ounce of Clove Oil has the antioxidant capacity of 450 lbs of carrots, 120 quarts of blueberries, or 48 gallons of beet juice.

Essential oils are extracted one of two ways: either by steam distillation or expression, or pressing. Distillation is the most prominent method used to extract aromatherapy oils, however. This technique involves steaming the plant matter until it breaks down. The byproduct of this breakdown phase is the plant's fragrant oil, which is cooled, separated from the water and finally filtered into its pure essential oil.

When the essential oil is extracted via the expression method, it is actually pressed from the plant source the same way lemon juice is pressed from a lemon.

Essential oils should not be confused with perfumes or other fragrance oils. Essential oils are natural to the plant, whereas fragrance oils are chemically produced to mimic certain aromatic scents for perfumes, colognes, candles, etc.

Some aromatherapy oils are too concentrated to apply directly to the skin. In this case, the oil is combined with a 'carrier' oil or lotion to dilute its strength. Applying stringent oils to the skin can cause harmful reactions, such as rashes or burns. And, certain essential oils should be avoided if you are pregnant or have been diagnosed with a specific illness.

There are three types of terpenes in essential oils: Phenylpropanoids (also called Hemiterpenes), Monoterpenes, and Sesquiterpenes.

Phenylpropanoids: Create conditions unfriendly to bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Most importantly,  phenylpropanoids clean the receptor sites on the cells. Without clean receptor sites, cells cannot communicate, and the body malfunctions, resulting in diseases. They are found in Clove (90%), Cassia (80%), Basil (75%), Cinnamon (73%), Oregano (60%), Anise (50%), Peppermint (25%).

Sesquiterpenes: Found in Cedarwood (98%), Vetiver (97%), Spikenard (93%), Sandalwood (Aloes) 90%, Black Pepper (74%), Patchouli (71%), Myrrh (62%), and Ginger (59%), Frankincense (8%), these molecules deliver oxygen to your tissues. Viruses, bacteria, and cancer have a difficult time surviving in an oxygenated environment.  Sesquiterpenes can also erase or deprogram miswritten codes in the DNA.

Monoterpenes:  They are found in most essential oils. While offering a variety of healing properties, the most important ability of the monoterpenes is that they can reprogram miswritten information in the cellular memory. With improper coding in the DNA, cells malfunction and diseases result, such as cancer.

9 Benefits (facts) of therapeutic-grade essential oils:

1. Essential oils are small enough in molecular size that they can quickly pentrate the tissues of the skin.

2.  Essential oils are lipid-soluble and are capable of penetrating cell membranes, even if the membranes have hardened because of an oxygen deficiency.  According to Jean Valnet, MD, essential oils can affect cell of the body within 20 minutes and are then metabolized like other nutrients.

3. Essential oils, according to researchers at the University of Vienna, stimulate blood flow, which increases oxygen and nutrient delivery.

4. Essential oils are some of the most powerful known antioxidants as determined by the ORAC (oxygen radical absorption capacity) test developed at Tufts University.

5. Essential oils are antibacterial, antifungal, anti-infectious, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, antiviral and antiseptic.  Some essential oils have been shown to destroy all tested bacteria and viruses.

6. Essential oils may detoxify the cells and blood in the body.

7. Essential oils containing sesquiterpenes have the ability to pass the blood-brain barrier.

8. Essential oils are aromatic, and when diffused, may provide air purification by (1) increasing ozone and negative ions in the air, (2) eliminate odors from cooking, bacteria, mold, animal, and other sources, (3) Filling the air with a fresh, aromatic scent.

9. Essential oils promote emotional, physical and spiritual well-being.
